Condition

Few retouches and repaints, especially in the curtain of the left door, on the wall hanging (particularly on the left and on the ropes), around the painter Bellini’s head, behind the signature, and few very small retouches on the face and the right hand of the lady, and some very small scattered on the composition ; overall good condition excepted the wall hanging.

Catalogue Note

Le sultan Mahomet II, fameux conquérant ayant assiégé et pris Constantinople en 1453, était un avide collectionneur d'oeuvres d'art. Il fit venir le célèbre peintre vénitien Gentile Bellini (vers 1429 - 1507) à Constantinople, à l'occasion des accords de paix signés entre la République de Venise et l'Empire Ottoman en 1479. A cette occasion, Bellini exécuta le fameux portrait de Mahomet II, aujourd'hui conservé à la National Gallery de Londres.

Elève de Girodet, Philippe-Jacques Van Bree voyagea beaucoup durant sa vie. Il séjourna en Italie, en Allemagne, en Angleterre, avant de rentrer en Belgique où il finit ses jours. Ses scènes historiques lui valurent une certaine notoriété internationale. Parmi elles, des oeuvres représentant de grands peintres du passé : Rubens peignant dans son jardin entouré de sa famille (conservé aux Musées royaux des Beaux-arts de Belgique), ou encore notre composition, où l'on observe l'artiste exécutant le portrait d'une jeune femme, sous le regard de curieuses demoiselles, à la cour de Mahomet II.
