Catalogue Note

Cf. A. el-Khouli, Ancient Egyptian Stone Vessels, Predynastic Period to Dynasty III, Mainz am Rhein, vol. III, 1978, p.326, pl. 83. Also compare H. Schlögl, Geschenk des Nils, Ägyptische Kunstwerke aus Schweizer Besitz, exhibition catalogue, Basel, 1978, no. 20, for a very similar example in Chephren diorite.

The form appears to be inspired by Canaanite (‘Abydos’ ware) vessels from the royal tombs at Umm el-Ga’ab; see Ruth Amiran, Ancient Pottery from the Holy Land, New Brunswick, N.J., 1970, pp. 59-66.
