Catalogue Note
The present drawing is a study for the larger charcoal of the same subject which appeared in the New York Times on December 7, 1952 (and is now in the George Lucas Collection). Rockwell donated it for the paper's "New York's One Hundred Neediest Cases" appeal. The program still exists and generates support for charitable organizations that address poverty and illness. Rockwell began contributing drawings to support the cause in the 1930s. (Smithsonian Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery Site, http://americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/online/tellingstories/)
