Condition

The following condition report was prepared by Simon Parkes: This large and important work is in more or less perfect condition. The canvas has been lined using a non-wax adhesive. The paint layer is stable and clean. The sky is un-abraded. There are some cracks in the sky, but these are stable and not of any concern. There are a few spots of retouching in the center of the sky in the left side of the picture, a small group of retouches above the figures in the olive grove, a spot in the lower left corner, and a few spots along the bottom right edge. Although Inness's glazes and remnants of old varnish do read slightly eccentrically under ultraviolet light, there do not seem to be other retouches. Again, the work is essentially in perfect condition, which is extremely unusual for a work of this scale.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
