Catalogue Note

For over forty years, Greta Magnusson Grossman introduced a uniquely modern aesthetic in the disciplines of furniture design, architecture and interior design.  Her work began to receive recognition in her native Sweden in the 1930s after she was awarded the second prize from the Stockholm Craft Association and opened a store and workshop in Stockholm.  Following her move to the Los Angeles in the 1940s, acclaim for her designs only grew as top collectors and Hollywood elite hired her for commissions or acquired her works through the Modern Shop at Barker Brothers.  The Hurley House set in the hills of Los Angeles remains as the icon of her architectural work. Featuring her signature cantilevered design, and emphasis on both the interior and outdoor living spaces, Grossman selected furniture by leading modernists that further defined the spaces within the open plan interiors. Lots 98 and 99 are two works chosen by Grossmann for this celebrated residence.
