Description

  • Maximilian Lenz
  • Goddess Iduna and peacock
  • signed and dated MAXIMILIAN LENZ / WIEN 1932 on the reverse
  • oil on canvas
  • 88 by 212cm., 34¾ by 83½in.

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. The canvas is slightly undulated in some areas, however this is not particularly visually distracting and could likely be corrected with retensioning. Under ultra-violet light some areas of old residual varnish fluoresce opaquely and make the surface difficult to read with certainty, however apart from some possible strengthening to the peacock's head and in the dark pigments around the seated goddess' right hand (which may simple relate to unevenness in the varnish) there appear to be virtually no notable signs of retouching. This painting is in good condition, and although a light surface clean could further enhance its appearance, it is otherwise ready to hang. Presented in a decorative frame.

Catalogue Note

Iduna, or Iðunn, is the god in Norse mythology associated with fertility and youth. As here, she is typically depicted bearing apples.
