Catalogue Note

Daniel Pitín was born in 1977 in Prague, Czech Republic where he continues to live and work.

Primarily a painter, Daniel Pitín’s work also comprises collage and video installation. His depictions of fictional architectural settings or theatrical stages have been described by critic Mark Gisbourne as “frequently operating at the boundaries of what constitutes our understanding of spatial architectonics.” The artist approaches painting as a director considers a film set. The context is newly created, entirely artificial. It is designed for a specific reason, but at the same time it mimics the outside world, providing a platform where “real” time and memory exists alongside a fictionalised time period. The notion of bringing together history, memory and fiction with images sourced from reality into this plane, appeals to Pitín. Crime movies and detective series have long enthralled him, with the role of the detective being of particular interest. Pitín compares the detective’s ability to access all strata in society (in his attempts to uncover the “truth”), with the role of the artist.
