Catalogue Note
The outstanding feature of this child's blanket chest is the painted decoration of bold and singular compass designs, with arcs and circles intersected by arcs in contrasting colors. The composition of the decoration on the front is similar to a miniature painted chest from Herkimer County, NY; see Mary Antoine de Julio, German Folk Arts of New York State (Albany, NY: Albany Institute of History and Art, 1985), p. 14.
