Catalogue Note

The unidentified artist of the Taufschein for Catharina Eberhard appears to have drawn it and filled out the baptismal information all in one sitting. Since we have no clue to the location or the clergyman involved (nor to the date of baptism), we may only guess that a local schoolmaster accommodated those who came to him seeking a certificate for their child or godchild. This maker clearly enjoyed utilizing the typical Pennsylvania German motifs of hearts, geometric stars, vines, and tulips. -F.S.W.
