Catalogue Note

"What passes in the soul is reflected in the face... He who cannot capture it here cannot paint it, and he who cannot paint it is not a portrait painter", wrote Johann Caspar Lavater (1741-1801) in the third volume of his treatise "Physiognomic Fragments for the Promotion of Human Understanding" (1783/1784). Albert Anker was among those masters who knew how to depict his models in a wonderfully empathetic way as personalities full of character, breathing life into each one. The girl with blonde hair and bright blue eyes featured here is a most impressive example of his masterful technique.
