  • fully marked, the finials with maker's mark of Benjamin Smith II, one numbered 1 and the other with tureen numbered 2 and cover 4
  • Silver
  • length over handles 8 3/4 in.
  • 22.2cm
modelled after the Warwick Vase, the covers chased with a band of acanthus and palm and with heraldic demi-lion finials, engraved with comtemporary arms twice on the feet and covers

Catalogue Note

Provenance: (Probably) Robinson, Fisher & Harding, Peel Heirlooms sale from Drayton Manor, Tamworth, August 8, 1918.

The arms are those of Peel. The family were baronets and textile manufacturing pioneers. The finial is the family crest of a demi-lion holding a shuttle.

A soup tureen from this service was sold by Sotheby's, New York, October, 21, 1997, lot 180 for $62,500. Its pair was sold by Lyon & Turner, London, November 23, 2008, lot 148 for £25,000.
