Catalogue Note

In this embroidery, the medallion truly dominates the design.  Having palmettes in the medallion's interior and issuing curling highly stylized leaves, this pattern most likely follows in the tradition of earlier embroideries from the region such as examples in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Textile Museum, see Jennifer Wearden, "A Synthesis of Contrasts," Hali, issue 59, pls. 3 and 5, pp. 104-105, dated to the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries respectively.
