Condition

The catalogue reproduction does not do justice to the fantastic play of light and crispness of detail, even in the far background, of this signed work. The canvas has been recently relined and is flat and stable. There is an even varnish. There are a few long horizontal lines of craquelure in the upper half of the canvas. Inspection under UV light shows repair of a tiny damage in the upper right corner, three very small areas of retouching and a few spot restrengthenings in the sky. One area of repair in the horizon, just where the sky meets the distant hills, this can be seen in the catalogue reproduction. Overall this work is beautifully - preserved, quite untouched and in excellent condition. The effect of light is very evocative of a winter's day, especially the contrast between the misty horizon and the brightness of the snow in the foreground. The activity of the figures is a delight to look at, even with a magnifying glass. This lot is sold in a moulded decorative gilt frame. A little bit of loosening to the corners of the frame and two knocks, but ready to hang.
