Abdulhamid I, the twenty-seventh Sultan of the Ottoman dynasty reigned from 1774 to 1789. Although he was known for his peaceful and religious nature; one of his most important reforms was the reorganisation of the army by renovating the Janissaries, an elite infantry unit that formed the Ottoman Sultan’s household troops and bodyguards.

Whereas the form of this sword is typically Ottoman, it features a carved black jade grip of Mughal origin, which was later opulently set with diamonds and emeralds. The marriage of a Mughal hilt with an Ottoman blade is found on a number of ceremonial or presentation swords, including examples in the Türckische Cammer in Dresden and the Moscow Kremlin.
