Description

  • German School, 18th Century
  • Portrait of Friedrich Augustus I, King of Saxony (1750-1827)
  • oil on canvas

Condition

This lot appears less pink in tone, and slightly darker overall, than the catalogue reproduction suggests. The canvas is relined and in good condition, with a fine craquelure and some unneven surface in the upper left. There are some small areas of bitumising paint lower right, and some signs of minor flaking beginning on the far sleeve. Overall there is nothing critical about the paint condition. The colours are very well- preserved, and would only benefit more from a gentle standard clean. The large size of the canvas combines with the energy of the sitter's pose and his sure gaze to make a striking portrait. Inspection under Ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the dark countours of the clothing, and some delicate strengthening of the shadows beneath his chin and around his nose. Otherwise the portrait is untouched. This lot is sold in a simple gold frame, with a number of small knocks, but structurally sound.
