Catalogue Note

Formed in 1977, Crass were the original anarcho -punks and by far the most politcally astute and active band (though collective would be more apt)  from Punk's first wave. Combining music, performance art, stencilled graffiti over corporate ads and most infamously tape collages, their DIY aesthetic promoted anarchism not as nihilism, but an engaged direct action for enviromentalism, animal rights and resistance of the status quo in Thatcher's England.

The present bass drum head has the now-iconic Crass stenciled logo, combining symbols of authority (The Cross, Swastika and Union Jack) with that of an Ouroboros (power ultimately eating itself).  Their logo migrated onto the back panel of a million leather jackets and their creative stencil art over adverts in the London Underground was a huge influence on Banksy.
