Catalogue Note

The images of Jimi Hendrix in this and the previous lot were taken by his friend, the photographer and filmmaker Jerry Schatzberg, at Forest Hills Stadium in July 1967.  The Jimi Hendrix Experience was performing at the time as an opening act for teen favorites The Monkees.  While the young guitarist had attracted considerable attention in England for his revolutionary guitar playing and flamboyant performances, he had yet to achieve fame in America.  Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees were Hendrix fans, and hoped to introduce him to larger audiences by adding him to their bill.  The Monkees’ fans, however, failed to be engaged by Hendrix’s sonic onslaught, and Hendrix opted out of the tour after seven or eight poorly-received performances.

Schatzberg first met Hendrix in 1966 at Ondine, the New York discotheque co-owned by Schatzberg, where Hendrix performed as Jimmy James and the Blue Flames.  After Ondine closed, Schatzberg opened Salvation, where Hendrix played the club’s opening night.
