Literature

Dorothea Lange and Paul S. Taylor, An American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion (New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1939), p. 122

Condition

This early print is on light double-weight paper with a semi-glossy surface. It is essentially in excellent condition. When examined very closely in raking light, faint evidence of a skillfully-repaired tear can be seen. It has been repaired with the application of a micro-thin layer of Japanese tissue on the reverse, and the surface of the print has been expertly retouched. The penciled "RA" notation on the reverse is located just off-center and is very faint.

Catalogue Note

This is a scarce, early print of an image that was included in the first and subsequent editions of Dorothea Lange’s and Paul Taylor’s now-classic 1939 book, An American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion.  Through Lange’s photographs and Taylor’s text, the book documented the westward migration of American farmers and farmworkers, from the cotton fields of the South, and the drought-plagued Midwest, to California.  Lange encountered the men in this photograph in Calipatria, California – the southernmost part of the state – where they looked in vain for farm work and subsisted on meager government relief checks.
