Condition

This early exhibition print, on semi-glossy paper, has a rich range of tonality and delivers a remarkable level of detail throughout. In raking light, the following are visible: several small, soft circular-shaped impressions that do not break the emulsion; 2 linear scratches (each measuring no larger than one inch) that do not appear to break the emulsion in center and left portion of the image; and minor soiling, scuffs, and faint silvering. This print is flush-mounted and trimmed to the image, with some resultant wear at the edges. There are 4 tiny losses of emulsion along the upper edge. On the reverse of the mount, abrasions and remnants of earlier dry-mounting tissue indicate that this print was at one time affixed to a secondary mount. 'Evans' [twice], '#67,' and '38.2268' [twice] are written on the reverse in an unidentified hand in pencil. The Museum of Modern Art exhibition label on the reverse has the following typed information: Artist 'EVANS' Title 'GOTHIC GATE COTTAGE NEAR POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK, 1931' Circulating Exhibition No. '57' Museum No. '38.2268' [crossed out and '1228.69' written in pencil] Box No. 'GR. II' [in pencil]
