Catalogue Note

This Capture of Christ re-emerged in 2002 as a highly important addition to the oeuvre of Bartolomeo Manfredi, perhaps Caravaggio's most important follower in Rome after his death. The picture originally formed part of the illustrious collection of the Austrian Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. Until its rediscovery, the picture was known only through an engraving by Pieter van Leysebetten, which was part of a series of engravings illustrating the archduke's collection, as well as through a painting by David Teniers the Younger depicting the picture gallery of the archduke. Gianni Papi dates this picture to circa 1613-1615, based on comparison with another important work by Manfredi, Mars Chastising Cupid (Art Institute of Chicago).
