  • signed G. Washington lower right
  • oil on canvas
  • 55.5 by 81cm., 22 by 32in.

Provenance

Galerie de Souzy, Paris

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is a pattern of hairline craquelure and a faint stretcher market corresponding to the outer and central vertical stretcher bars. Ultra-violet light reveals notably a small circa 2 by 1.5cm repair in the grass in the lower centre (patched on the reverse), some scattered signs of retouching notably small strokes towards the upper-right of the sky, and some strokes along the framing edges primarily to the left and right. Under ultra-violet light there are some more opaque areas of green fluorescence over some of the figures and foreground suggesting the work has been selectively cleaned in the past. This work is overall in good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt rococo-style frame with a nameplate.
