There is a patch on the reverse attending to a repaired and filled puncture in the lowest lying flowers at the right side. There is a fine repaired vertical tear of approximately 3 in. in the drapery at left. There is scattered retouching distributed evenly throughout and some areas of stregnthening to the darks surrounding the individual flowers. Offered in a decoratively carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Monnoyer was one of the most celebrated flower painters of his day whose patrons included many aristocratic and royal patrons (indeed King Louis XIV owned around 60 paintings by him).  Born in France, his early training was in Antwerp, though by 1650 he returned home and began to create paintings for the Hôtel Lambert, one of the most important private homes in Paris.  He spent most of the last decade of his life in England having first gone there in 1690 as part of a group headed by Charles de La Fosse to work for Ralph Montagu, later 1st Duke of Montagu, on the decoration of Montagu House.  Other commissions followed from the 3rd Earl of Carlisle and the 1st Duke of St Albans.  This lush, overflowing vase of flowers is painted on a standard English-size canvas and probably dates from Monnoyer’s late period in England.
