Description

  • The Master of the Langmatt Foundation Views
  • Venice, a view of the Grand Canal standing at the Campo San Vio, looking east towards the church of Santa Maria della Salute
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been recently relined, but there are still areas of effective impasto, for example in the clouds, on the figures in gondolas. The glassy reflections in the still surface of the water, the movement of the clouds across the open sky, and the clear light falling on the stones of the pavement are very beautiful and effective when viewed from a distance. There are small patches of discoloured retouchings in the sky, noticeable with the naked eye on closer inspection. The paint surface is smooth and flat and in stable condition covered by an even varnish. A repaired line of craquelure, likely due to previous stretcher pressure, runs along upper and the two side edges. Inspection under UV light shows aforementioned retouchings in the centre right and along upper right and left edges of the sky. And area of retouching lower right on wall, also spot retouchings to the boat lower left, four patches of older repainting to the stone along canal front. Otherwise mimnal cosmetic spot retouching on some of the buildings. All retouchings are well-executed and not noticeable to the naked eye, except for in the sky. This lot is ready to hang. It is offered in a simple and elegant gilt frame, with some of the gold paint scuffed revealing an auburn colour, but structurally in good condition.
