The catalogue image is representative. The panel support and the paint surface are stable. The panel used to have three vertical batons glued to the reverse since their removal small wooden supports have been added to the back of the panel reinforcing two horizontal old join lines. The first of which runs horizontally 11 cm from the panel’s upper edge, the second is 28cm from the upper edge. There are signs of the beginnings of a few horizontal splits at both margins that have likewise been supported by small wooden supports. The paint surface is in very good general condition, details in the insects and vines are intact, as is the background which is unusual for a painting of this type. The varnish is slightly yellowed and there are some minor scattered discoloured retouchings that are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV light shows retouchings along the horizontal panel join lines, and confirms the aforementioned retouching. The varnish fluoresces in a manner that would make any earlier restoration difficult to see. The painting is offered in a tortoise shell frame in good condition.
