Description

  • Johann Friedrich Morgenstern
  • Interior of a gothic church
  • signed and dated lower centre at the base of the column: J. F. Morgenstern / fec 1793
  • oil on copper
  • 33 by 45cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Vienna;
Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 15 April 2008, lot 87, where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The colours are slightly warmer than the illustration suggests. The copper panel is flat and stable and the paint surface, which has quite recently been cleaned, is in very good condition throughout. The only damages are three old repaired losses: the largest of .75 x .75 cm. on the column far right, and two smaller in the top right hand corner and in the centre at the base of one column. There has been some slight marginal abrasion caused by movement in the frame. The varnish is a little uneven, but the painting should not require any immediate attention. Offered in a modern ebonised wood frame with a gilt sight edge, in very good condition.
