Description

  • Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne
  • An interior scene with elegant figures playing music
  • oil on oak panel, en grisaille

Provenance

Sale, Cologne, Lempertz, 4-7 May 1955, lot 171, where acquired by a family member of the present owner;
Thence by descent.

Condition

The colours are much more golden in tone than the illustration suggests. The panel is uncradled, with a very slight convex bow. There is some incipient lifting of the paint in the upper right hand section of the picture which has resulted on one or two tiny losses and will need prompt attention. The paint surface otherwise appears in good sound condition, but inspection under ultra-violet light reveals later strengthening to all the outlines, faces and principal shadows in the picture. It is not clear why this was done, for the paint surface does not appear affected by wear, and it may be that much of this repaint is only for emphasis and may be largely superfluous. It is in parts a little heavy and has contributed to some loss of detail. Offered in a modern gilt plaster frame, numerous small chips.
