Condition

The painting is considerably lighter in tone than the catalogue image suggests. The wooden panel is cradled, bevelled on three edges and is in stable condition. There is an old split down the middle, running vertically 10 cm from the pictures right edge which has been well restored. There are some sensitive retouchings along the split line that are visible under UV light. Also visible under ultra violet light are very few other minor retouchings, the old and marginally discoloured varnish appears milky under UV light which would make earlier retouchings difficult to see, there is possible some early restoration in the left background and in areas of wear. The picture is in fair overall condition and details such as the impasto in the yellow of the actor’s stockings and the fluid brushwork are well preserved. This lot is offered in a gold frame in fair condition.
