Condition

This signed work has bene relined and as a reult the paint is slightly pressed. The canvas is flat and stable. There is no sign of flaking of loss of paint. There is craquelure throughout and a dirty varnish, which makes the craquelure more apparent in the lighter areas. This can easily be remedied with a gentle clean by a restorer. There is a thin line where the canvas may have been folded at one point, horizontally along the centre. It has been well- restored . An even finer line vertically down the cente of the canvas, also restored. The subtleties of the sitter's skin tone and the glint in his armour are still very effective and pleasing to the eye. Inspection under UV light reveals infilling of craquelure and some repair to the front of the sitter's sash. This lot is offered ina gilded frame, with decroative mouldings, slightly loosed at the edges and with a small chip in the paint lower right corner. The frame matches those of lots 725, 726 and 728.
