Description

  • Studio of Sir Anthony van Dyck
  • The Crucifixion
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been recently relined, cleaned and restored. The paint surface is stable. The painting is in very good condition, the luminosity of the flesh tones and the subtleties of the painting in the clouds remain intact. There is only a small degree of surface dirt and a clear even varnish layer. Visible to the naked eye are a few localised areas of restoration that appear only to be strengthening areas of wear, the most visible of which is a small 2cm squared area on the inside elbow on Christ's left arm. There are some other minor scattered retouchings throughout that are visible on inspection under ultraviolet light but generally there has been little work done and almost no interference in the body of Christ and the cherubs. The picture needs no further attention. The picture is offered in an Italian gold frame with some substantial losses of gilt.
