Description

  • Christ amongst the Pharisees
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 26 November 1958, lot 52, for £900 to Molina (as Theodor Rombouts).

Condition

The canvas had been recently relined and the lining is stable but hard. The condition of the painting is inconsistent. The head of Christ for example is well preserved other than immediately around his eye. There is also a fairly large restoration on his neck. Many of the faces and particularly the dark beards of the elders have been substantially repainted, particularly those that are in shadow. Many of the folds within the drapery have been strengthened and there are a few localised areas of wear, such as to the face of Mary immediately behind Jesus.
"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."

Catalogue Note

At the sale in 1958 this painting was sold with an attribution to Theodor Rombouts, as suggested by M. J. Friedländer. An alternative attribution to Jacob van Oost the Younger has more recently been suggested.
