Description

  • Bonaventura Peeters the Elder
  • Dutch vessels and a rowing boat on choppy waters by a small harbour town, a Man 'o war safely moored and two gentlemen overlooking the scene in the foreground
  • signed with monogram lower right: B . P .
  • oil on oak panel

Condition

The panel has fairly recently been thinned and cradled. The painting is in moderate overall condition. The paint surface is very discoloured and has suffered from wear in parts, leading to the loss of some of the finer details. There are two old repaired joins or splits, running across the panel, one at the level of the topmost flag and the other halfway down. There is an old repainted oblique scratch running from centre of the top edge nearly as far as the windows of the house. There are numerous areas of old retouching around the latter two, and in addition quiet substantial re-touchings across much of the sky, the central parts of the waves and the sails of the boat on the left. The joins are not visible except under raking light but some of the old repairs have now visibly discoloured. Offered in a later wood and faux turtleshell verneer frame in good condition.
