Description

  • Claes Molenaer
  • Winter landscape with skaters, travellers and their horses outside a village, figures packing bundles onto a sledge by an archway on the left
  • signed lower right: K. molenaer
  • oil on oak panel

Condition

The panel consists of three planks held by a modern half cradle on the reverse. The cradle is causing some problems to the panel, for a fairly recent 47 cm split has developed in the central plank. The old varnish has recently been removed, except around the signature. Overall the painting surface is a little worn, and there are visible discoloured old retouchings throughout, but notably in the sky. Ultra violet light reveals restoration to the upper join, to the newer split, scattered retouchings throughout the sky, the figures and to a lesser extent the buildings. Offered in plain wood frame with a gilt sight edge, some damages
