Description

  • Adam Willaerts
  • Coastal scene with a man-of-war dropping anchor off a fortified headland and men dismantling a boat in the foreground
  • bears initials on the rowing boat lower right: AW
  • oil on panel

Condition

The panel has recently been thinned and cradled. The paint surface has recently been cleaned and restored. Overall the picture is in moderate condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals fairly extensive retouching throughout the sky, notably around the horizon line and in the central clouds. There are fewer and more scattered repairs to the sea, ships and figures but the sail of the central boat has been much repainted. The restoration has been reasonably well-carried out and the picture requires no further attention. Offered with a modern gilt wood and red-painted cassetta frame.
