Description

  • Francis Cotes, R.A.
  • Portrait of a lady and her child
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

E. F. Albee Collection, U.S.A.

Condition

The large lined canvas has three unrestored damages each measuring about 5 inches. One is in the foliage, upper left, the second is vertical and runs through the ladies left sleeve, the third is horizonal and situated to the right of the ladies right foot. There is an area in the centre of the ladies skirts that has had a knock from behind that has caused an area of smaller verticle damages. The paint surface is very dirty, the varnish discoloured, and other than the above mentioned damages the surface is stable. There are other localised areas of retouchings and strenghtenings but much of the paint surface remains well preserved, particularly the figure of the little girl.
