Description

  • Nicolás Falcó
  • The Madonna Annunciate; The Angel Gabriel
  • a pair, both oil on panel, gold ground, framed as one

Condition

Both panels are thick and have a very slight convex warp. The are protected by a horse hair, canvas and gesso backing typically seen on Spanish pictures of this time. The panels have possibly been slightly cut as they don't quite align at the upper edge along the slim band of undecorated goldground. There is a small damage in the left hand panel in the reading stool of the Virgin, and in the right hand panel, two damages on the upper and lower left edge, likely to be old knocks. These damages each measure approximately 1x1 cm. A further tiny damage in the angel's red sleeve, repaired. The paint layer is made up of gold background with punchwork stylized with a pattern of leaves and ironwork, in good condition and beautifuly contrasted with the bold coloured garments of the figures. The gold in the halos has faded slightly. The detail of the features in the faces and the hands is well-preserved. There is very fine horizontal craquelure throughout the picture. Inspection under UV light reveals spot retouching in both faces, in the angel's wings, and to his cloak, especially in the lower part. There is a thin slice of restoration at the back of the Virgin's cloak and on either side of her neck and to the top of her halo. A few dots of retouching on the dove, and a few tiny knocks in the gold ground have been repaired. This lot is offered in a wooden frame, painted black and gold in the inner band. It has suffered a number of tiny knocks but is structurally sound.
