Condition

The canvas is relined and the painting has been fairly recently cleaned and restored. The relining process has very slightly pinched the paint surface. A 1.75cm (approx) deep horizontal restored band along the upper margin is probably an extension to the canvas and has discoloured. The paint surface is in very good condition with no major damages and only some tiny, meticulously executed, retouchings throughout that have slightly discoloured.

Catalogue Note

Whilst this painting derives from, in reverse, a composition by Willem van de Velde the Younger of circa 1672, now at Petworth House, West Sussex, which was engraved by Thomas Major, Brooking has updated the hull of the man-of-war in the distance to be consistent with eighteenth century models. Another version is in the collection of the Hon. James Bruce.
