Condition

The panel is secure and the paint surface is in good, stable condition. The picture has a thick uneven varnish that flouresces under ultra violet light, making inspection difficult. Only very minor scattered retouchings are visible. This picture is offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with only minor losses.

Catalogue Note

A copy of the picture in the Sackville Collection, Knole, Kent (National Trust), this painting is from a series of small copies after Van Dyck of which many remain at Warwick Castle in the State Boudoir. The sitter was the daughter and, after the death of her brother in 1674, heiress of Lionel Cranfield, 1st Earl of Middlesex (1575-1645). Circa 1637 she married Richard Sackville, Lord Buckhurst, later 5th Earl of Dorset (1622-1677).
