Catalogue Note

This and two other collaborations between Jan Brueghel the Younger and Hendrick van Balen explore the same theme of the Virgin and Child and attendant figures in a lush landscape setting, and are similar in style. One of these, in the Sammlung Hohenbuchau, is both on a panel of similar dimensions and opens through the wooded backdrop at the left into a distant landscape.1

There is a copy by an unknown follower in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe.Another was in the Northwick Park sale.3
