Catalogue Note

The presence of the Antwerp brand on the reverse of the panel would indicate that this painting is an early work by Keirinckx, painted during his Antwerp period, prior to his departure for England in 1625. A comparable panel from this period, which is signed and dated 1621 and uses the same compositional arrangement of thick woodland facing a single sapling across a path, is in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig (inv. no. 182).
