Catalogue Note

This lively night scene depicts a cheerful group of revellers celebrating Fasnacht (Shrove Tuesday) on the eve of Ash Wednesday.  It was and still is on this day each year that many people finish the last of their storeroom ingredients before beginning a period of fasting through Lent.  Dusart has captured this scene of merrymaking in a typically atmospheric way, with the figures in the foreground basking in the heat and light of the fireplace over which a pancake is being cooked, while in the background, amidst the shadows, a single figure performs a dance in front of an enthusiastic audience.
