Catalogue Note

Looking closely at these enchanting floral compositions, the viewer can notice their immersion into a cooling medium which freezes their stunning beauty. In his series of Flower Paintings, Marc Quinn exploits the spectator's instinctive attraction towards harmony, to draw him into a sophisticated and elegant world which can be seen as the final outcome of a last embrace. The technical virtuosity in depicting the flowers and fruits, their formal perfection diverts the viewer from the mortal snowy liquid, as if death was sublimated by an overwhelming beauty. What appears to be familiar vanishes into the unknown. Unclassifiable, the art of Marc Quinn is one which surprises, questions and leaves us with unsolved queries.
