Edwin Mullins, Alfred Wallis: Cornish Primitive Painter, Macdonald, London, 1967, illustrated fig.68.

Condition

Unexamined out of frame. The board appears at least partially adhered to a backing board. The board is unevenly cut, with an uneven layer visible in the lower right in keeping with the nature of the artist's technique, with un-painted areas appearing to the edges, and a very slight crease to the top right corner, visible upon close inspection. There is a raised, un-even to the board in the largest grey sail. There is a tiny pin-sized hole visible lower centre. There are some fine lines of horizontal craquelure to the work, most apparent to the two large sails of each smaller ship in the foreground, to the smaller white sail on the far right hand side and to the top third of the central grey sail. There appears a very small area of possible old in-filling to the pale grey sail of the largest ship, only noticeable upon extremely close inspection. Elsewhere there is very slight flattening to some of the raised elements of thicker impasto, but this excepting the work appears in very good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals an area of fluorescence and possible retouching to the aforementioned area of uneveness on the left hand side of the largest sail of the central ship. Housed behind glass in a thick dark wooden and gilt frame, float-mounted against a linen-textured mount. Unexamined out of frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
