Condition

The illustration is accurate. Good overall condition despite the usual minor scratches and marks due to age and handling. There are the usual minor restorations throughout the marquetry. There is a trace of a previous handle on each upper drawer. These handles were possibly a later addition. Two minor old shrinkage cracks on the undertier. The gilding of the mounts is slightly tarnished and rubbed. There are some traces of water of the leather writing top of the lower drawer.

Pierre Pioniez, ébéniste reçu maître en 1765
Un bonheur-du-jour quasiment identique, à l'exception du plateau d'entretoise manquant, est reproduit dans P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 657. Les pieds à volutes constituent un signe distinctif de l'oeuvre de Pioniez.
La production de RVLC et Roussel comprend également des meubles à la structure et au décor proches de notre lot (cf. B. Langer, Die Möbel der Residenz München, vol. I Die französoschen Möbel des 18. Jahrhunderts, München, Prestel, 1995, p. 160).
