Catalogue Note

In this portrait, taken circa 1932 several years after their relationship had ended and in the wake of his rupture with Lee Miller, Man Ray employed his newly mastered technique of solarisation, whereby dark and light tones can be partially reversed and accentuated, with a shadow cast onto her face as if to give the appearance of a different skin tone.
