Catalogue Note

Harriet Mary Capes (1849-1936) wrote stories for children and was described by Conrad as 'an old girl but as intelligent as they make them' (see letter to Warrington Dawson, c. 1912, Collected Letters, V, p. 119). She had been a friend of the Conrads since 1895 and, in 1907, actively sought a house for them in Winchester. In 1908 Conrad dedicated A Set of Six to her. Capes herself compiled Wisdom and Beauty from Conrad: An Anthology in 1915 but it was soon withdrawn due to copyright problems.

The volume, containing the writer's most celebrated short story, was published on 13 November in Edinburgh. Conrad himself only received a copy on 17 November and appears to have inscribed a number of copies on 20 November.
