Catalogue Note

The iconic Rolex Daytona ‘Paul Newman’ model, was originally designed in the late 1960s. Officially referred to as the ‘Exotic dial’ by Rolex, it was later renamed ‘Paul Newman’ by collectors as the American actor was seen wearing the watch on Italian promotional posters for one of his movies. The ‘Paul Newman’ dial is characterised by square markers in the chronograph scale and subsidiary dials with an alternating pattern of colouration. Though widely available at the time, these dials were produced in smaller numbers and are rarer to find on watches today. The presently offered lot is particularly rare as most Daytona models were produced in stainless steel.
