Catalogue Note

With their richly carved backs, this impressive set of six chairs was conceived in the traditionally called Anglo-Dutch style and associated with the designs of Daniel Marot, the polyvalent French artist who worked for William III, both in Holland and England.

The faceted tapered legs joined by curved stretchers match the known designs by Marot for chairs, and the elaborately sculpted and pierced back of this model relate to his elaborate scrollwork patterned garden designs.

This style was very popular in the 19th century and many reproductions were made. This rare group made in the 17th century, was probably part of a larger suite, an armchair of which was sold in Sotheby’s Amsterdam on 21st December 2005, Early Furniture, Sculpture and Works of Art, lot 50 (€3,360).
