Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good. There is some minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The polychromy has some unstable areas due to the naturally occurring splitting of the wood, including along the side of the kneeling figure facing us, the side of the kneeling figure looking up next to him, and where the group joins the base. Here flaking has led to the exposure of a white layer of gesso. There are a few minor areas of flaking including to the tops of the heads of the apostles, some of the finger tips, and the nose of the third figure to the left in the upper row. The wood base is a later addition and has wear to the black paint throughout.
