Catalogue Note

The present fireplace surround is closely related to the one designed and completed by the marbrier Claude-Félix Tarlé, and sculptors Jacques Verberckt and François-Antoine Vassé for the room known as the Salon d'Hercule at the château de Versailles. Although construction of the room began in 1710 by Robert de Cotte for Louis XIV, following the death of Le Roi Soleil in 1715, the project was postponed. The project started again in 1724 under the patronnage of Louis XV and was completed in 1736 with the ceiling painting Apothéose d’Hercule by François Le Moyne, which gave the room its present name.
