Catalogue Note

George Eastman registered the trade name "Kodak" on 4 September 1888, but had already registered the present patent for what was to become the Kodak no.1 camera on 9 May 1888 (patent no.6,950).  This historic camera (illustrated) was designed by the cabinet-maker Frank Brownell, using Eastman's roll film.   This collection of patent specifications includes that for the first "Brownie" camera (patent specification 13,667, 30 July 1900), and its continuing refinement and development over the ensuing decades.  The original "Brownie", cased in a simple wood block, sold for $1 in the United States and for 5 shillings in Britain.  It revolutionized popular photography by putting the device in the hands of millions.
